Dense fog continued to envelop Delhi and large swathes of north India on Wednesday, severely disrupting air and rail operations. Flight departures and arrivals at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) faced extensive delays amid poor visibility.

120 flights delayed and canceled due to dense fog

As per the Delhi Airport Flight Information Display System (FIDS) data, around 120 flights including international ones were delayed by several hours till 8 am. This included 21 international departures, 23 international arrivals, 33 domestic departures, and 43 domestic arrivals were impacted.

Another 53 flights were canceled outright citing fog and operational issues, according to the FIDS data recorded till 8 am on Wednesday. The 53 flights include 21 domestic arrivals, 16 domestic departures, 13 international departures, and 3 international arrivals.

Passenger trains delayed up to 6 hours 

Around 20 trains to Delhi were running behind schedule due to the fog. As per Northern Railways, the Puri-Nizamuddin Purushottam Express and Hyderabad-Delhi trains saw delays of 6-6.5 hours.

Several other trains like the Kaifiyat Express from Azamgarh and the Ambedkarnagar-Katra train were delayed by around 5 hours.

Other trains expecting long delays included the Katihar-Amritsar Express (4.5 hours) and the Rewa-Anand Vihar Express, Vasco-Nizamuddin Express and Manikpur-Nizamuddin train (2-2.5 hours). Eight more trains were running around 90 minutes late.

The Railways also added that eight long-distance trains have been delayed by 1-1.30 hours. The trains affected include the Howrah-Kalka Mail, Saharsa-New Delhi Vaishali Express, Prayagraj-New Delhi Express, Muzaffarpur-Anand Vihar, Chennai-New Delhi and Jammutawi-Ajmer

Zero visibility in parts of North

As per IMD data on Wednesday morning, visibility dropped below 200 meters in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi due to dense fog. Areas of isolated dense fog were also observed in parts of east India including Bihar, West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, and Assam.

The fog spells add to common disruptions every winter for Delhi and adjoining areas. Air traffic is most severely hit due to visibility issues. Rail operations also take a significant beating, causing problems for passengers.
