New Delhi: In a major crackdown on international drug trafficking, the Customs Department has apprehended two Brazilian women and a Kenyan national for smuggling cocaine in three separate cases. The accused were caught at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport with a total of ₹40 crore worth of cocaine concealed in capsules inside their stomachs.
On January 28, a Brazilian woman traveling from Paris was intercepted at IGI Airport following intelligence inputs. Officials of the Customs Department questioned her, and she confessed to carrying narcotics inside her body. She was taken to a hospital, where doctors extracted 98 capsules from her stomach. Upon testing, the substance was confirmed as cocaine, weighing 866 grams, with an estimated international market value of ₹13 crore. The woman was arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
In another case, Customs officials detained a Kenyan national arriving from Addis Ababa at IGI Airport. Upon interrogation, he admitted to smuggling narcotics by swallowing drug-filled capsules. He was immediately taken to a hospital, where 67 capsules containing 966 grams of cocaine were retrieved. The seized cocaine is valued at approximately ₹15 crore. The accused was taken into custody after a formal case was registered against him last Friday.
The third incident involved another Brazilian woman who landed at IGI Airport from Paris on January 24. Upon being questioned, she admitted to concealing drugs in her stomach. She was admitted to a hospital, where doctors extracted 100 capsules filled with white powder, later confirmed as cocaine. The total weight of the narcotics was 802 grams, with an estimated street value of ₹12 crore. The woman was immediately arrested.
Additional Commissioner of Customs, Anuj Kumar Pandey, confirmed that all three accused have been charged under the NDPS Act. Authorities continue to strengthen security and intelligence efforts to combat international drug trafficking through Indian airports.
