Delhi court granted the National Investigation Agency (NIA) a 12-day remand extension for Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key conspirator in the 2008 Mumbai 26/11 terror attacks that killed 166 people. Extradited from the US in March 2025 after the US Supreme Court dismissed his appeal, Rana’s ongoing interrogation is poised to uncover critical details about the Pakistan-backed Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) plot. The decision, reported by Live Mint and ANI, follows an 18-day custody period where Rana’s evasive responses frustrated investigators.
NIA Secures 12-Day Remand for Tahawwur Rana
Rana, a 64-year-old Pakistani-Canadian businessman, allegedly facilitated the attacks by providing logistical support to co-conspirator David Headley, who conducted reconnaissance in Mumbai. The NIA claims Rana was privy to the entire operation, with evidence suggesting he identified targets in Delhi for similar strikes. His ties to LeT operatives and alleged ISI contacts, including Hafiz Saeed and Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, are under scrutiny, as per The Times of India. The agency hopes this remand will yield breakthroughs, especially given parallels to the recent Pahalgam attack.

Despite Rana’s claims of innocence, blaming Headley entirely, the NIA is intensifying its probe, grilling him for 8-10 hours daily. The court’s in-camera hearings, led by Judge Chander Jit Singh, reflect the case’s sensitivity, with the NIA citing risks of Rana leaking sensitive information. His earlier requests for family contact were denied, underscoring the investigation’s high stakes.
