Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court on Tuesday granted interim bail for two days to Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is accused of sexually harassing and stalking six female wrestlers.

Interim bail was also granted to co-accused Vinod Tomar, the former WFI assistant secretary. The interim bail was granted by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Harjeet Singh Jaspal on a bail bond of ₹25,000 each.

Magistrate HS Jaspal further notified that he would conduct the hearing on regular bail for the two accused on July 20.

Brij Bhushan counsel claims ‘media trial’; Judge warns against ‘bad reporting’

During the interim bail hearing, Brij Bhushan’s counsel Rajiv Mohan alleged a media trial against the accused. Brij Bhusan protested against the chargesheet filed by Delhi Police against him being reported verbatim by the media.

In response, the magistrate said that the advocate may move an application on the matter before the High Court or trial court.

Magistrate Jaspal warned the media against misquoting judges and being responsible in their coverage of the case. “Bad media reporting has consequences and can constitute contempt of court,” he observed.

Ahead of Brij Bhushan’s appearance on the Court, security around his residence was beefed up to avoid any incident.

The outgoing WFI chief has been accused by six female wrestlers of sexual harassment. Delhi Police, after concluding preliminary investigations, filed a thousand-pages-plus chargesheet against Brij Bhushan, saying that he was ‘liable to be prosecuted and punished for offences’ of sexual harassment, molestation, and stalking. Brij Bhushan has denied all accusations.

“Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is innocent and the chargesheet filled against him is full of lies and is part of political conspiracy,” Brij Bhushan Singh’s lawyer AP Singh told media after news of his interim bail was revealed.
