Delhi T1 Airport roof collapse: Govt announces Rs 20 L ex-gratia for deceased's kin

A roof collapse damaged several cars parked at Terminal 1 of Delhi’s IGI Airport on Friday morning due to incessant rains. Reportedly, four people have been injured and are being treated at the hospital. Meanwhile, the rescue operation is still on.

Update: In response to the early morning collapse of a piece of the canopy at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal 1 due to heavy rainfall, Union Minister of Civil Aviation K Ram Mohan Naidu has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 20 lakh for the family of deceased kin. The compensation of Rs 3 lakh each has been announced for the people who got injured in the incident.

While speaking to media, the Union Minister informed that “We are taking this incident seriously…” and he also clarified that the portion of the canopy has collapsed at the old building that was opened in 2009.


As the first rain of the monsoon spells Delhi, some shocking visuals have surfaced from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal 1, where fragments of the ceiling collapsed on many automobiles on Friday.

According to the fire officials, four individuals have been reported injured and are being treated at a hospital. 

As per details, three firemen rushed to the scene as soon as they heard the news. Reportedly they got the call at 5:30 in the morning reporting that Terminal 1 at Delhi Airport had a ceiling collapse. Besides the roof sheet, the support beam is also said to have collapsed which led to damage to several cars parked in the area. 

Meanwhile, the rescue operation is still on to make sure that no one else is trapped under the incident spot.

As a result of the incident, all departures from Terminal 1 at Delhi International Airport have been suspended and check-in counters are also closed for safety measures till further notice.

Meanwhile, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, Union Minister of Civil Aviation, stated that the rescue effort is still in progress and that he is personally keeping an eye on the situation.

"Personally monitoring the roof collapse incident at T1 Delhi Airport. First responders are working at the site. Also advised the airlines to assist all affected passengers at T1. The injured have been evacuated to hospital. Rescue operations are still ongoing," Ram Mohan Naidu said in a post on X.


Reportedly, several areas in Delhi-NCR witnessed water logging after the first rain spell in the city. The National Capital Region also received incessant rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning on Friday. 
The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall for the next seven days in Delhi-NCR.
