In a big initiative to address air pollution, Delhi's government announced that petrol and diesel would no longer be available for vehicles that are older than 15 years. The rule will come into effect from March 31, according to Delhi's Environment Minister, Manjinder Singh Sirsa. This follows after the earlier prohibition on 10-year-old diesel vehicles and 15-year-old petrol vehicles plying on Delhi's roads.
Air pollution is still a serious issue in Delhi, particularly in winter when air quality deteriorates to alarming levels, causing serious health problems. The government has been imposing tough regulations to stop auto emissions, which are one of the main reasons for pollution in the city.
After meetings with the officials regarding pollution control policy, Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa reiterated the government's commitment to cutting emissions. He underlined that sophisticated technological interventions will be put in place in addition to the ban on old vehicles to neutralize the pollution level.
In an effort to further reduce pollution, the Delhi government is set to introduce a series of sophisticated measures, such as the use of anti-smog guns in different areas of the city. These machines will lower the level of pollutants in the air. Cloud seeding technology is also being proposed to trigger artificial rains, thereby purifying the air of pollutants.
The officials have also demonstrated that stringent action will be taken against whoever is caught violating the new rules. The owner of a 15-year-old gasoline vehicle will be penalized if caught. Delhi Transport Department and Traffic Police have been directed to strictly implement the new rules in order to make people comply. The government action aims at improving the air quality of Delhi and protecting public health and is thus crucial for car owners to follow the new guidelines.
