The terror attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday (April 22) has again raised the atmosphere of tension between India and Pakistan. In such a scenario, there has been a commotion in the India-Pakistan border Army. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Saturday made an important announcement calling upon all media outlets, news agencies and social networking sites to avoid live telecast of defence operations and activities of security personnel.

As per the news agency report, this move has been made for national security and to avoid leakage of sensitive information. The ministry clarified in its order that live telecast of defence operations and activities of security forces may endanger national security. Such telecast not only divulges sensitive information but can also weaken the campaign.

Ministry's directive, national security interest

In this context, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has asked all media outlets and social media users to share information responsibly. "In the interest of national security, all media outlets, news agencies and social media users are advised to use maximum responsibility while reporting on defence and other security-related matters and strictly follow existing laws and regulations.".

The Role of Media and Social Media

The Ministry has appealed to media outlets and news outlets to verify the sensitivity of any content pertaining to defence operations before broadcasting it. In addition to this, users of social media have also been requested to exercise caution and not share such material, which could be a threat to security forces. "All should do their duty towards national security," the ministry emphasized.

Why is this step required?

Live telecast of defence operations can give strategic details to hostile forces, thus weakening the security position of security forces. The directive is at a time when the digital era is experiencing quick information dissemination. The action is intended to sensitize the media and the public to safety.
