‘Defaming’: Congress asks Himanta Biswa Sarma (X/@JaipurDialogues)
In a deepening political row, Congress leader Rashid Alvi has sharply criticized Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's allegations linking Gaurav Gogoi's wife, Elizabeth Colburn, to Pakistani elements, questioning the basis for such claims and the absence of legal action. The escalating dispute has drawn national attention and sparked a heated debate over the limits of political discourse.
Speaking to news agency ANI, Rashid Alvi challenged Himanta Biswa Sarma to provide concrete evidence supporting his accusations against Elizabeth Colburn, a British national. Alvi questioned the source of Sarma's information and why no First Information Report (FIR) has been filed if the allegations are credible. "What proof does he have for this? If indeed some information came to him, then why has no FIR been lodged till now?" Alvi stated.
Alvi expressed concern over the deteriorating level of political discourse, emphasizing the importance of refraining from defaming opposition leaders and their families. "The level of politics should not stoop so low. There is a limit for everything. Defaming opposition leaders and their families by speaking in the media is not appropriate," he said. Alvi described such statements as unfortunate and detrimental to healthy political debate.
The controversy erupted following Sarma's allegations about Elizabeth Colburn's purported links to a Pakistani national, Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, and insinuations about potential connections to Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The Assam Cabinet has directed the state's top police official to register a case against Sheikh, investigating his relationship with Colburn and assessing any implications for India's national security.
The allegations and subsequent investigation have elicited strong reactions from various political quarters. Congress leaders have accused Sarma and the BJP of engaging in a smear campaign to tarnish Gaurav Gogoi's reputation. As the political storm intensifies, the controversy raises questions about the ethical boundaries of political attacks and the potential misuse of state machinery for political gain.
