Death toll in Tamil Nadu illicit liquor case climbs to 47; Accused under questioning

On June 20, the Tamil Nadu Director of Medical Education, Sangumani reported that at least 47 people had died in Kallakurichi after consuming illicit liquor. On the second day of the state assembly, the members of AIADMK wore black clothes, raised slogans, and created havoc in the house on the happenings in Kallakuchiri. The speaker of the house, Avvaku ordered the watch and ward staff in the assembly to take the members of AIADMK alongside heavy police personnel outside the assembly in Chennai.

On June 20, the Tamil Nadu Director of Medical Education, Sangumani reported that at least 47 people had died in Kallakurichi after consuming illicit liquor. On the second day of the state assembly, the members of AIADMK wore black clothes, raised slogans, and created havoc in the house on the happenings in Kallakuchiri. The speaker of the house, Avvaku ordered the watch and ward staff in the assembly to take the members of AIADMK alongside heavy police personnel outside the assembly in Chennai. 

The members of the AIADMK demanded a discussion of what went wrong in Kallakuchiri taking the lives of 47 people. 

Tribute to the dead

The assembly paid tribute to all those who passed away in the Kallakuchiri incident. The members also paid their respects to 17 former members of the assembly and a current DMK MLA who lost their lives. They also remembered the people who died in the Kuwait blaze, out of which 7 were from Tamil Nadu by keeping a 2-minute silence. The assembly will be held till June 29. 

On the morning of June 21, three of the accused from the case were sent in for a 15-day judicial custody and were taken to Culladore Central Prison.

What did the BJP State President Say?

Annamalai, the president of BJP in Tamil Nadu wrote a letter to the union minister Amit Shah requesting for a CBI inquiry for the Kallkuchiri case. The state president blamed the ruling DMK government for allegedly being involved with the local liquor sellers leading to this incident. 

The BJP state President wrote that a similar thing happened in Marakannam which claimed 23 human lives. Under the DMK government, around 60 people have lost their lives due to booch in the past 2 years. 

The family members of the deceased from Kallakuchiri claimed that illicit liquor was very easily accessible to the people and it was being told in the most cream areas of the town. 

Government's action

The state government has decided to conduct a judicial inquiry into the matter and has given this responsibility to a retired judge B. Gokuldas to submit the report within three months. Tamil Nadu CM has announced to give a sum of Rs 10 lakhs to the family of the deceased and an amount of Rs 50,000 to those who are under treatment in hospitals.
