New Delhi: French aerospace giant Dassault Aviation has announced plans to establish a maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility near Noida. This facility will support the Indian Air Force's (IAF) French-origin fighter jets, namely the Rafale and Mirage 2000, as per officials familiar with the matter.
The newly formed entity, Dassault Aviation Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul India (DAMROI), is expected to commence operations within six months. According to sources, the facility will gradually expand its scope of activities to better serve the needs of the IAF. "The French firm recently notified the Defence Ministry and the Indian Air Force about establishing DAMROI to provide crucial support for the French-origin fighter aircraft in India," a defense official shared with ANI.
Posina Venkata Rao, a seasoned professional with extensive experience at Dassault, has been appointed as the CEO of the new facility. Rao's long-standing association with Dassault Aviation in India positions him as a valuable asset for the company's operations in the country.
The IAF currently operates a fleet of 36 Rafale jets and approximately 50 Mirage 2000s. Furthermore, India is in discussions with France for an additional procurement of 26 Rafale Marine aircraft to be deployed on the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, which currently operates MiG-29K fighters. The anticipated deal for these advanced twin-engine jets is estimated to be worth around ₹50,000 crore.
Dassault's decision to set up the MRO facility aligns with India's strategic vision of Aatmanirbharta, or self-reliance. The company plans to locate this facility in one of Noida's industrial sectors, a move aimed at bolstering India's defense capabilities.
The new MRO facility is set to enhance the support available for the IAF’s French-origin fighter aircraft. Dassault has indicated that the MRO will work closely with India's aeronautical industrial ecosystem, allowing for a significant increase in operational support. The facility may also extend its services to Jaguar deep penetration fighter jets, given their French lineage.
In addition to supporting IAF operations, Dassault is negotiating a deal with the Indian Navy for the sale of Rafale Marine jets. This procurement aims to enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Navy aboard the INS Vikrant.
