Gukesh, who had pledged to conquer his fear of heights if he became champion, shared a video of his thrilling jump on December 16.

A Promise Fulfilled

Gukesh's journey to the bungee jump began during a casual beach walk with Gajewski on a rest day of the championship. The coach pointed out two individuals bungee jumping and jokingly said, “If you win the world championship, I’m going to do bungee jumping.” To everyone’s surprise, Gukesh responded, “I’ll also join you.” Despite his fear of heights, he embraced the challenge and looked forward to the leap from a bridge in Singapore.

Celebrating a Historic Win

Upon returning to India, Gukesh received a hero's welcome at Chennai airport on December 16. Thousands of fans gathered to greet him as he arrived home after making history as the second Indian to win the World Chess Championship, following Viswanathan Anand. The 18-year-old chess prodigy was met with cheers and celebrations from officials of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) and students from Velammal Vidyalaya, known for nurturing chess talent.

“I am very glad to be here. I can see the support and what it means to India... You guys are amazing. You gave me so much energy,” Gukesh expressed as he addressed the crowd outside the airport.

A Grand Reception

Gukesh was adorned with garlands and surrounded by supporters eager to catch a glimpse of their champion. The celebrations included traditional dancers and students holding banners in honor of his achievement. Officials from the All India Chess Federation were present to congratulate him as well. A specially designed car featuring photos of Gukesh and the slogan "18 at 18" was arranged to escort him home, marking his historic title as the youngest undisputed world champion.
