Cyclone Remal to cross Bengal coast on May 26 midnight, IMD issues warning

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a warning for the deep depression over central BoB after it moved north northeastwards and lay centered at 11:30 am over east central BOB about 710 km south of Canning (WB). According to the weather department, the cyclonic storm over east central BoB will intensify by the morning of May 25 and cross between Bangladesh and WB coasts around midnight on May 26.

According to the weather department, significant weather changes will be witnessed due to a developing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal from May 24 to May 27.

Director and Head of the Meteorology department, Agartala, Dr Partha Roy, while speaking to ANI informed that "South and Gomati districts will experience heavy to extremely heavy rain on May 26. North, Unakoti, Dhalai, and Khowai districts will experience similar rainfall conditions on May 27. Winds of 40-50 kmph may accompany the rain."

Advisory for fishermen

Keeping the situation in mind, the authorities have asked the people to take necessary precautions and have directed the fishermen not to venture into the south Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea till May 24, the central Bay of Bengal till May 26 and the North Bay of Bengal from May 25 till May 27. Fishermen out at sea are advised to return to the coast.

According to the official press release, the department has alerted for “light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely over coastal districts of West Bengal on 26th & 27th and isolated heavy rainfall over North Coastal Odisha on 25th & 26th May and isolated extremely heavy rainfall likely over coastal districts of West Bengal on 26th May.”

Apart from this, “Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over eastern districts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal on 27th and 28th May.”

Impact Expected

According to IMD, the cyclone is likely to impact the life. Flooding of roads, water logging in low-lying areas and closure of underpasses mainly in urban areas of the above region can be seen. Occasional reduction in visibility due to heavy rainfall. Disruption of traffic in major cities due to water logging in roads leading to increased travel time can be witnessed. Minor damage to Kutcha roads. Possibilities of damage to vulnerable structure. Localized landslides/Mudslides. Damage to horticulture and standing crops in some areas due to inundation. It may lead to riverine flooding in some river catchments.
