New Delhi: In a significant development on Saturday, Sonia Gandhi was unanimously elected as the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) chairperson. The decision was made during a Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, the party’s highest decision-making body, convened by Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge at the party headquarters in New Delhi.
The meeting, chaired by Mallikarjun Kharge, was attended by prominent leaders including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, among others. During the session, the party acknowledged its performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections and resolved to form separate committees in states where the results were below expectations to implement corrective measures.
In a noteworthy move, the CWC unanimously urged Rahul Gandhi to assume the role of the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. Rahul Gandhi assured the party's senior leadership that he would make a decision on this "very soon."
Kharge described the Lok Sabha election mandate as a “decisive rejection” of divisive politics and hate. He emphasized that the INDIA bloc must maintain cohesive functioning both inside and outside Parliament to counter such divisiveness effectively.
Two significant resolutions were unanimously passed during the meeting. The first was the election of Sonia Gandhi as CPP chairperson, and the second was the formal request for Rahul Gandhi to take on the mantle of the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
