A day after the Juvenile Justice Board in Pune granted bail to a teenager who was involved in a car accident that killed two people, the police on Monday said they will seek a higher court's permission to try him as an adult after facing criticism of poor investigation into the case of a minor hitting two young technicians while driving drunk in his Porshe car on Sunday morning. However, the Pune Police had granted bail to the 17-year-old teenager involved in the car accident on the basis of writing an essay of '300 words'.
A day after this made headlines in the media, Pune Police on Monday said that it will approach the Sessions Court and request to try the accused as an adult. Two people were killed in the accident involving the teenager. A senior Pune Police officer said that an FIR has also been registered against the teenager's father and a real estate businessman. Police said the 17-year-old teenager was allegedly driving a Porsche car and hit two people riding a motorcycle in Kalyani Nagar at around 3.15 am on Sunday, killing them. Police claim that the teenager was drunk at the time of the incident. There are only four months left for him to turn 18.
On Sunday, the teenager was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board, from where he was granted bail after a few hours. The board had directed him to go to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) and read the traffic rules and give a presentation before it within 15 days. The board's order said, "CCL (child in violation of law) will write an essay of 300 words on the topic of road accidents and its solutions." The board also directed to send the juvenile to a prohibition center for counselling.
The bail conditions sparked a storm of protests in the city. The families of both the deceased have demanded strict punishment for the accused. People are also criticizing the Juvenile Board. According to the police, an FIR has been registered against the teenager under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code and sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. The accused minor is the son of a prominent builder of Pune. He had thrown a party for twelve of his friends on Saturday night to celebrate the results of class 12th. He first had drinks and dinner with friends at a restaurant called Kosi in the posh area of Mundwa.
The father of the 17-year-old boy involved in a fatal car accident that killed two people has been arrested by Pune Police from Maharashtra's Aurangabad. Since the accused was a minor, he apparently did not have a driving license. On the basis of CCTV footage, police estimate that at the time of the accident, the accused minor was driving the Porsche at a speed of 160 kilometers per hour. Then he hit a motorcycle at Kalyani Nagar intersection. Police said the motorcycle rider, Anees Awadhiya and Ashwini Costa, both 24 years old, hailing from Madhya Pradesh and IT professionals, were killed.
