The police chief expressed strong discontent with the media, blaming them for inaccurate reporting that, according to him, contributed to the unrest.

Kolkata Police Chief Blames Media for Misinformation

Speaking to the media, Commissioner Goyal, quoted by news agency ANI, defended his department’s actions. He stated, “My DCP, who was protecting the boys, is unconscious, and what has happened here is due to the wrong, malicious media campaign that has been ongoing as far as the Kolkata Police are concerned. What has Kolkata Police not done?”

Goyal further refuted claims that the hospital's Emergency Room had been damaged by the crowd. In a tweet, Kolkata Police clarified, "The crime scene is the Seminar Room, and it has not been touched. Don't spread unverified news. We will initiate legal action for spreading rumours."

Violence Erupts as Mob Targets Police and Hospital Property

The commissioner’s outburst followed a night of chaos, where a mob vandalised RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, damaging multiple police vehicles. Several police cars were set on fire, while others were overturned by the rioters. Goyal confirmed that, in addition to the DCP, several other police officers were also injured during the attack by miscreants who infiltrated the protesting crowd.

Kolkata Police Deny Allegations of Shielding Accused in High-Profile Case

Commissioner Goyal stressed that the Kolkata Police had done everything within their power to manage the situation. He noted that the main accused in the case is already in custody, and the police are fully cooperating with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has taken over the investigation. He added that the investigators worked tirelessly to gather evidence, which will be crucial in court.

In a pointed criticism of the media, Goyal accused them of running a "malicious campaign" that has eroded public trust in the Kolkata Police. He also clarified that the police never confirmed whether only one person was involved in the rape and murder of the woman at the center of the case, emphasising that they were awaiting scientific evidence to determine if it was a gangrape. He reassured the public that the police are not shielding any of the accused.
