Kerala News: A late-night police raid has sent shockwaves through Kerala's political circles, with the son of a CPI(M) MLA and eight others arrested for allegedly possessing ganja. The sensational bust has set the state abuzz with controversy, raising questions of privilege and accountability.
It was said that the group was caught with a large quantity of the prohibited drug. To the police officers, the group is suspicious as they may be part of a big network. As early as before conclusions drawn from the investigations, the incident already sparked heated debates in the state.
But CPI(M) legislator denied those allegations which he termed blackmail. "This is nothing but a political gimmick," he said as the outrage of the critics and opposition leaders who say people deserve an impartial probe because the ruling party's alleged double standards when it comes to their crusade against drugs.
The news has been sweeping through social media, with the hashtags #MLAsonArrest and GanjaScandal trending online. Many called for swift justice by saying that no one is above the law. However, others cautioned to say that a fair investigation needs to be conducted before any judgment is made.
It is particularly embarrassing to CPI(M), which for long has been an enthusiast of anti-drug drives targeted at the young ones. For many, it creates a disconnect between a public image of someone close to its leadership and what those close to its leadership do.
As the political storm intensifies, across the ruling party stands a question mark: will they stand up or only add to this growing mountain of mistrust among people? Definitely, one thing will be confirmed to Kerala people-the storm they keenly want to watch is going to unfold.
