The Centre, during later-half of Monday, assured that data in the CoWIN portal – country’s Covid-19 vaccination tracking platform – is completely safe. The Centre finally responded to the claims by a report that suggested personal information of people registered on the portal has been breached and leaked on Telegram app by a bot account.

“Co-WIN portal of Health Ministry is completely safe with safeguards for data privacy… Only OTP authentication-based Access of Data is provided,” read a statement from the Union Health Ministry.

A data-driven news portal South Asia Index, in a series of tweets on Monday morning, reported that crucial sensitive data allegedly involving Aadhaar, Voter ID, Passport numbers and mobile phone numbers of several individuals, have been leaked on Telegram app. The tweets also informed that details of all who have received Covid-19 vaccines and details of their family members have also been leaked.

Meanwhile, in its statement, the Centre listed the security measures – “Web Application Firewall, Anti-DDoS, SSL/TLS, regular vulnerability assessment, Identity & Access Management,” among other things. The statement also said the Union Health Ministry has requested CERT-In to look into this issue and submit a report.  The investigation is trying to ascertain the source of the alleged leak, official sources said.
