Covid-19 updates: India recorded 656 new Covid-19 infections in the last 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry reported on Sunday, as the country's active caseload rose further to 3,742.
The nationwide death toll increased by one to 5,33,333 after a fatality was registered in Kerala. The current case fatality rate stands at 1.18%.

To date, over 220.67 crore Covid vaccine doses have been administered across the country, the Health Ministry noted.

On Saturday, India recorded 752 cases and four deaths, while active cases crossed the 3,000-mark to 3,420. The previous day saw 640 new infections and one fatality, with active cases increasing to 2,997 from 2,669.
The central government has said the current spike is not worrisome and urged people not to panic, though it advised those with comorbidities to wear masks as a precaution.
So far, 22 cases of the Covid sub-variant JN.1 have been detected nationwide up to December 21, sources revealed. Of these, 19 were in Goa and one each in Kerala and Maharashtra, with details of one case yet to emerge.
JN.1, a descendant of Omicron deemed a 'variant of interest' by WHO, has rapidly spread in recent weeks. However, officials said no clustering due to JN.1 has been observed in India so far, with all cases found to be mild.
