India on Sunday logged 841 new Covid-19 cases, marking the highest single-day rise in over seven months, Union Health Ministry data revealed.
The active caseload climbed to 4,309 from 3,997 the previous day. The country also recorded three more virus-related deaths - one each in Kerala, Karnataka and Bihar.
Saturday's tally stood at 743 fresh cases and seven fatalities, according to health ministry.
The recent uptick in infections follows a period of relatively low transmission, with daily cases dropping to double digits in early December. Experts cite the emergence of the JN.1 sub-variant and colder weather as factors in the spike.
Since the pandemic began in January 2020, India has reported 4.5 crore total cases and over 5.3 lakh deaths.
Despite the surge, India's recovery rate remains high at 98.81%, with over 4.4 crore recoveries so far.
Under the nationwide vaccination drive, more than 220 crore doses have been administered.
With New Year celebrations approaching, authorities are on alert, closely tracking the situation and urging pandemic safety protocols to control further viral spread.
Experts have advised vulnerable groups like the elderly and those with comorbidities to avoid crowds and wear masks. Currently, there is no need for renewed public health curbs, they assert.
As of Friday, 178 cases of the JN.1 sub-variant were detected across nine states, with Goa reporting the most at 47, followed by 41 in Kerala.
Other states with JN.1 infections are Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Delhi.
Health officials remain vigilant as 2022 draws to a close, emphasizing Covid-appropriate behaviour to prevent a significant resurgence.
