New Delhi: The Pathankot District Court in Punjab has handed down life imprisonment to 12 individuals involved in the brutal murder of Indian cricketer Suresh Rainas uncle. Each convict has also been fined Rs 2 lakh. The individuals were identified as members of the notorious Babaria gang, who executed a deadly robbery at Rainas uncles residence in 2020.Details of heinous crimeThe tragic incident took place on the night of August 19, 2020, when Suresh Rainas uncle, Ashok Kumar, was asleep on the roof of his home in Thariyal village, Pathankot. Members of the Babaria gang broke into the house with the intent to rob. Among the gang members were women who played an active role in the crime. The intruders launched a vicious attack on the family, severely injuring Ashok Kumar and his wife, Asha Devi, with sharp weapons. Tragically, Ashok Kumar succumbed to his injuries, and Asha Devi slipped into a coma. Three other family members were also injured during the assault. The gang looted cash and jewelry before fleeing the scene.Impact on Suresh RainaAt the time of the incident, Suresh Raina was playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in Dubai. Upon receiving the devastating news, he immediately left the tournament and returned to India. Life imprisonment for culpritsThe police quickly apprehended 12 individuals connected to the crime, including several women, and they were subsequently jailed. After a thorough trial, the Pathankot District Court found all the accused guilty, sentencing them to life imprisonment and imposing a fine of Rs 2 lakh on each. According to the cases lawyer, Harish Pathania, the crime resulted in the deaths of two individuals, including Rainas uncle, Ashok Kumar.
