Court denies bail to Bhavna Sharma, who filed 14 fake rape cases against innocent men

New Delhi: Rajasthan police on Saturday arrested Bhavna Sharma for filing a false rape case against an advocate in May this year. The investigation revealed that Sharma has a history of filing fake rape cases across various cities, aiming to extort money. Her arrest came after an advocate lodged a complaint against her in the district court, accusing her of attempting to extort money through false rape charges. She was later arrested by the police officials. However, on Saturday sessions court denied her bail.

A long pattern of deception

The complaint against Bhavna Sharma was registered at Police Station on May 8. Reportedly, Sharma has filed 14 false cases of rape and blackmail between 2016 and 2024 in different police stations.

How did Bhavna Sharma operated?

According to the complaint, Sharma befriended Nitin Meena and pressured him into marriage. When he refused, she threatened to file false rape charges and demanded money. Meena disclosed that Sharma had filed similar cases against multiple individuals. For instance, she had filed a rape case against Meena at the Jyoti Nagar police station.

Following the complaint, the police acted promptly and arrested Bhavna Sharma. She was presented in court and subsequently placed in police custody. The investigation revealed that many of her 14 cases were baseless. Some cases had already been dismissed with a final report, while others are still under investigation.

Official statement

Additional DCP Guru Sharam Rao of the Special Investigation Unit for Crimes Against Women confirmed to the media that Sharma was found guilty of extortion during the investigation. The police gathered substantial evidence, including online transaction records, supporting the allegations against her. She has been booked under Sections 388 and 504 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Chronology of false cases

  1. September 2016: Filed her first case at Shyamnagar police station under Sections 323 and 341 of the IPC. The same month, another case was filed under Sections 376 and 354 of the IPC. The accused was acquitted in the second case.

  2. October 2018: Filed a case at Jyoti Nagar police station under Sections 376, 307, 354, and 500 of the IPC. A chargesheet has been filed.

  3. May 2019: Filed a case at Kanota police station under Sections 376D, 377, 354, 307, 342, and 323 of the IPC against five men. An FR has been filed.

  4. May 2020: Filed a case at DLF PH3 police station in Gurugram under Sections 376(2)N and 420 of the IPC. The accused was acquitted, and she was convicted under 344 CrPC in March 2022.

  5. January 2021: Filed a case at Shipra Path police station under Sections 376(2)N and 420 IPC. An FR has been submitted and accepted by the court.

  6. February 2021: Filed a case at Pachore Rajghar police station under Sections 376, 376(2)N, 342, and 506 of the IPC. The case is under investigation.

  7. June 2022: Filed a case at Chitrakoot police station under Sections 323, 341, 354, and 506 of IPC and Section 66 of the IT Act. The FR has been accepted by the court.

  8. June 2022: Filed a case at Nagar police station under Sections 376(2)N, 354D, and 506 of the IPC. An FR has been submitted.
