New Delhi: Suresh Gopi, the Union Minister and Kerala's first BJP MP, recently paid homage to two political stalwarts—Indira Gandhi and K Karunakaran. He hailed Indira Gandhi as 'Bharathathinte mathavu' (mother of India) and praised Karunakaran as the father figure of the Congress party in Kerala. Gopi's remarks came during his visit to Karunakaran's memorial, 'Murali Mandiram', in Thrissur. Gopi won the Thrissur seat, defeating the CPI(M) candidate by a big margin in the elections.
He emphasized that his visit was to honor his political mentors and not to make any political statements. Gopi also highlighted his personal connections with Karunakaran and his wife, Kalyanikutty Amma, akin to those he had with EK Nayanar and Sarada Teacher.
Despite conferring titles like 'Mother of India' and 'Father of the Congress party in Kerala', Gopi clarified that this didn't undermine the roles of other Congress founders in the state. He continued to praise Karunakaran's legacy as a courageous administrator who left a significant mark on Kerala's political landscape.

Addressing rumors of resignation from the Modi government, Gopi dismissed these claims as incorrect and reaffirmed his commitment to serving Kerala as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet. He expressed pride in representing the people of Kerala in the Council of Ministers.
Apart from visiting Murali Mandiram, Gopi also showed reverence at the renowned Lourde Mata Church in the city. Nevertheless, his previous actions, including gifting a golden crown to St Mary's idol at his daughter's wedding, faced backlash from political opponents who claimed the crown was actually made of copper, not gold.
