Waqf amendment bill to be scheduled for tomorrow (ANI )
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, will be brought to Lok Sabha by the BJP government on Wednesday, according to Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju. The bill will be moved post-Question Hour and will be preceded by an 8-hour discussion. The Waqf Amendment Bill aims to regulate the administration of Waqf, render it transparent, and make it digital. As per Rijiju, the bill doesn't interfere with the autonomy of religious institutions and has been designed to give rights to those who are not yet in possession of it.
The opposition has severely panned the amendment bill, calling it "unconstitutional" and accusing the BJP of attempting to "steal" rights of Muslims. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi accused the bill of being a "serious violation" of Article 14, 25, 26, and 29 of the Indian Constitution.
The bill was earlier introduced in the Lok Sabha last year in August and was sent to a Joint Parliamentary Committee for scrutiny. The committee was formed under the chairmanship of Jagdambika Pal.
The Amendment Bill is intended to improve the management and administration of waqf properties in India. It intends to reverse the drawbacks of the previous act and improve the efficacy of Waqf boards by way of reforms.
