Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking his intervention to ensure the security of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other participants of his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.

According to the information, the development has come after a clash between Rahul Gandhi-led Congress workers and Assam police personnel in Guwahati.

In his letter, Kharge alleged that the Assam police ‘unnecessarily obstructed’ the yatra and ‘manhandled’ Rahul Gandhi. He also expressed concern about the safety of the yatra participants in view of the "hostile attitude" of the Assam government.

Kharge, in the letter mentioned, “On the 21st of January, 2024 as the Yatra returned to Assam via Arunachal Pradesh, another outrageous attack occurred on the Yatra in Sonitpur district. The local Superintendent of Police in Sonitpur District happens to be the brother of Chief Minister, Shri. Himanta Biswa Sarma. He watched to see that BJP workers attacked and manhandled the Indian National Congress' Social Media team, along with our General Secretary, Shri. Jairam Ramesh. Shri Ramesh's car was attacked, while miscreants shouting anti-BJNY slogans, tearing off the BJNY sticker on the vehicle, and attempting to throw water on the passengers inside.”

“On the same day in Sonitpur district, the BJP's district party workers approached and blocked Shri. Rahul Gandhi's convoy. The BJP's workers then physically assaulted the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Shri. Bhupen Borah, resulting in him bleeding profusely,” he further added.

Congress President further urged Union Minister Amit Shah to intervene in the matter personally and ensure the safety and security of the yatra participants.

"I request you to take immediate steps to ensure that the yatra is allowed to proceed peacefully through Assam. I also urge you to direct the Assam government to cooperate with the yatra organizers and provide them with all necessary assistance," Kharge wrote.

Referring to the violence-like situation that erupted during the Assam leg of ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’, the chief minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday tweeted, “With reference to wanton acts of violence, provocation, damage to public property and assault on police personnel today by Cong members, a FIR has been registered against Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal , Kanhaiya Kumar and other individuals under section 120(B)143/147/188/283/353/332/333/427 IPC R/W Sec. 3 of PDPP Act.”

Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra is an ongoing movement being led by the Indian National Congress leader Rahul Gandhi which started on 14 January 2024 from Thoubal in Manipur and will end on 20 March 2024 in Mumbai spanning east-west of India.
