Saket Gokhale and VK Saxena (X/SaketGokhale)
New Delhi: The Lieutenant Governor (LG) VK Saxena of Delhi wrote an editorial in the Indian Express on Wednesday, sharply criticizing the current Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government and openly asking for a “change”. In his piece, Saxena not only condemned the ruling party but also called for a significant change in leadership, a move that has generated considerable debate as the Delhi Assembly elections approach.
With the Delhi Assembly elections imminent, the LG holds control over the entire state machinery, including all officials designated as election officers. This role is pivotal, as it encompasses the administration and oversight of the electoral process.
According to the Constitution, Governors and LGs are expected to maintain political neutrality. However, concerns are rising that many Governors and LGs across India have aligned themselves with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), effectively acting as partisan operatives for the party. Saxena’s editorial, which is overtly critical of the AAP and advocates for a change in leadership, has intensified fears about the impartiality of the upcoming elections.
Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale shared a post and wrote, "When the LG himself writes an op-ed & campaigns against the ruling AAP, it is IMPOSSIBLE to expect any sort of free & fair elections. If he’s allowed to remain in charge, he will control the entire election machinery. How fair can an election be when the person controlling the process & officials is openly partisan & campaigns against the ruling party AAP?"

Another user of X platform named Sid wrote LG is supposed to rubber-stamp whatever the elected government decides, he doesn’t have duty to the public at large ? Why even have an LG or governor - just let the CM enjoy power!

What’s next, blaming the weather for election results? Let’s not forget, we have an independent Election Commission whose sole job is to ensure free and fair elections. But sure, let’s ignore that and focus on the real issue here: the LG dared to share his thoughts! Clearly, the only way to save democracy is to remove anyone who disagrees with the ruling party. Because, you know, that’s how democracy works, right?"
