New Delhi: The Congress party has unveiled its ambitious “Yuva Udaan Yojana,” aimed at providing a monthly financial assistance of ₹8,500 to educated but unemployed youth in Delhi for one year, contingent on their success in the upcoming elections. This initiative was announced by Congress leader Sachin Pilot, who previously served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan.
Pilot emphasized that the scheme is designed to ensure that beneficiaries actively engage in the workforce rather than receiving funds passively. "We will provide financial assistance to youths who can show their skills in a company, factory or organisation. They will get money through these companies. This is not a scheme under which one will get money while sitting at home," he stated. The focus is on empowering young individuals to enhance their skill sets and secure employment in fields relevant to their training.
The “Yuva Udaan Yojana” is part of a broader strategy by Congress to regain influence in Delhi, where they have been out of power since December 2013. In addition to this new initiative, Congress has introduced other welfare schemes aimed at bolstering their appeal among voters. On January 6, they announced the “Pyari Didi Yojana,” which promises ₹2,500 per month to eligible citizens if elected. Following this, the “Jeevan Raksha Yojana” was revealed on January 8, offering free health insurance coverage up to ₹25 lakh.
The political landscape in Delhi is competitive, with polling for the 70-member assembly scheduled for February 5 and vote counting set for February 8. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has dominated recent elections, winning 67 seats in 2015 and 62 seats in 2020, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has consistently placed second.
In stark contrast, Congress has struggled significantly, failing to secure any seats in the last two elections. As the Congress party seeks to reclaim its position in Delhi's political arena, initiatives like the “Yuva Udaan Yojana” may play a crucial role in attracting young voters who are eager for employment opportunities and financial support.
With these strategic announcements, Congress aims to revitalize its image and connect with the youth of Delhi as they approach a critical electoral battle. The effectiveness of these schemes will ultimately be tested at the polls, determining whether they can regain influence in a city that has seen significant political shifts over the past decade.
