Cold temperatures and dense fog continued blanketing parts of North, Central and Northeast India on Thursday, with little relief expected until at least January 15, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

In North India, very dense fog was likely to persist for a few morning hours in isolated pockets of north Rajasthan through Friday before dissipating.

The fog caused delays for 24 trains heading to Delhi from various locations, according to the Railways.

IMD report of January 11

The IMD predicted dense fog for a few morning hours from January 11-15 in isolated areas of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura.

At 5:30 am Thursday, visibility was down to 0 meters in Punjab's Bathinda and Agra, 25 meters in Tripura's Agartala, and 50 meters in Jammu, Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi, Madhya Pradesh's Satna, Bihar's Purnea, Assam's Tezpur and Haryana's Hisar.

In Delhi's Palam area, visibility was 100 meters. Rajasthan's Sriganganagar and Madhya Pradesh's Bhopal saw 200 meters.

Similar conditions were expected through Friday in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, north Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Bihar, West Bengal and Sikkim.

The IMD said cold day conditions could continue in areas of Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab and isolated sections of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday before easing.

Rajasthan may also see cold days on Thursday in isolated pockets.

Temperature fall predicted in Central & East India

Temperatures are predicted to fall 2-3°C over the next three to four days in many parts of Central and East India, according to the IMD. Uttarakhand could see ground frost on Thursday and Friday.

In southern India, light to moderate rainfall is forecast for the next two days in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, coastal Karnataka and Lakshadweep before dry weather resumes, the IMD bulletin stated.

Residents are advised to take precautions against the cold and reduce visibility from fog while travelling. The weather office will continue monitoring conditions across affected regions.
