Harsh cold conditions gripped many parts of North and Central India on Sunday morning, with temperatures dipping below normal levels.

IMD report on cold wave

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said cold wave conditions prevailed in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. The chilly weather is expected to continue for 2-3 more days.

"Cold Day to Severe Cold Day conditions are likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Rajasthan during next 2 days and significant decrease thereafter," the IMD stated.

Any rain predictions?

It also forecast a new rain spell with thunderstorms or hail over Northwest and Central India, including Rajasthan and West Madhya Pradesh, from January 8-10.

Meanwhile, dense to very dense fog will persist over North India during the next two days before gradually easing, the IMD predicted.

Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh and East Rajasthan are likely to experience dense to very dense fog at night and mornings over the next few days. Other areas may see relatively less fog.

According to experts, another western disturbance will affect Northwest India starting January 8. Between the 9 and 10, Himachal Pradesh may receive snow and rain due to the system.

Cold wave conditions in North India

The extended cold snap has increased hardship across the region, with reduced visibility and transportation disruptions. The homeless and livestock remain vulnerable to the harsh conditions.

Authorities have advised caution while venturing out, especially in early mornings and late evenings. With temperatures dropping to 3-4 degrees Celsius in some areas, people are advised to take precautions against health risks.

The cold pattern marks a prolonged winter chill in North India this season. While rainfall could provide some relief, the cold day conditions may persist through next week in parts of the region.
