Citizenship Amendment Act: Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the Indian government is gearing up for a significant move related to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). It is anticipated that the government will soon announce the rules for CAA 2019, well before the Lok Sabha election dates are disclosed. A senior government official shared this information on Tuesday, as reported by news agency PTI.

Imminent Implementation of CAA

The official stated, "We are set to release the rules for CAA soon. Once the rules are in place, the law can be implemented, and eligible individuals can be granted Indian citizenship. The law has faced a delay of more than four years, and the rules are crucial for its execution."

Streamlined Online Process

With Lok Sabha elections projected for April-May, the official affirmed that the rules for the law would be notified before the official announcement of the next Lok Sabha elections.

Moreover, he added, "Yes, before that. The rules are ready, and the online portal is also prepared; the entire process will be online."

Applicants will be required to declare the year of their entry into India without travel documents, and no additional documents will be requested from them.

Background of CAA

The Citizenship Amendment Act, introduced by the Central Government, aims to grant Indian nationality to persecuted non-Muslim immigrants (including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians) who arrived in India from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan until December 31, 2014.

The bill received approval from Parliament in December 2019, and subsequent to the President's assent, widespread protests erupted in various parts of the country opposing the legislation.

The potential implementation of the rules indicates a crucial step towards resolving the delayed process associated with the CAA.
