In a heartbreaking turn of events, a routine day in the Tractor Tila settlement of Lakhimpur, Assam, took a devastating turn when a chicken fell into a well belonging to a local family. What began as a simple mishap soon escalated into a tragedy as two brothers, Manjit Deb and Prosenjit Deb Kumar, bravely leaped into the well in a desperate bid to save the stranded fowl.

After the prolonged absence of the brothers, their younger sibling, driven by concern, followed suit and plunged into the depths of the well. Alas, instead of emerging as heroes, the three men succumbed to the lethal combination of toxic gases lingering within the well, leaving the community reeling in shock and grief.

SDRF, NDRF spring into action

Following the crisis, local authorities sprang into action, summoning the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to the scene. With the assistance of the SDRF and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, a rescue operation was launched in a desperate bid to retrieve the bodies of the unfortunate victims from the watery grave.

A grim discovery

Tragically, the rescue efforts concluded with the retrieval of the lifeless bodies of the three brave souls from the depths of the well. Preliminary investigations indicate that the cause of death was suffocation induced by the noxious gases present within the confined space.

Expressing profound sadness over the incident, SP Cachar Numal Mahatta termed the mishap as deeply unfortunate. The bodies of the deceased have been transferred to Silchar Medical College for post-mortem examinations as the tight-knit community grapples with the profound loss of three cherished members.
