Chhattisgarh News: In a tragic incident from Chhattisgarhs Korba district, a 22-year-old man, identified as Digeshwar Rathiya, died after being bitten by a venomous snake on Saturday night. Rathiya was arranging his bed at his home in Baigamar village when a common krait struck him. Despite alerting his family and being rushed to a government hospital, Rathiya succumbed to the bite on Sunday morning during treatment.Following the death, the villagers caught the snake, fearing it might harm others. In a dramatic and superstitious response, they decided to burn the reptile alive on Rathiyas funeral pyre. A video of villagers dragging the snake, tied with a rope, to the cremation site surfaced on social media.Snake burnt alive amid funeral ritesThe villagers captured the snake using a rope and placed it in a covered basket. As Rathiyas body was taken to the cremation site, the snake was also dragged along and eventually thrown onto the funeral pyre to be burned alive. The villagers defended their actions, claiming fear of further attacks from the venomous snake.Korbas Sub-Divisional Officer, Ashish Khelwar, confirmed no legal action would be taken against the villagers for killing the snake. However, he emphasized the importance of educating locals about the role of snakes in the ecosystem and effective snakebite management. Khelwar highlighted the need for greater awareness to prevent similar incidents, stating that while snakes can be dangerous, they play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance.
