New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee denounced political parties on Wednesday for exploiting the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a Kolkata hospital for political gain, terming it "cheap politics".

Mamata Banerjee criticized CPI(M) and BJP, saying, “Instead of standing with the (woman’s) family, CPI(M) and BJP are indulging in cheap politics. They think they can do a Bangladesh here. But let me tell you, I am not greedy for power.”

Mamata: Prompt action taken in rape-murder case

Mamata Banerjee responded to criticism of her government's response to the rape-murder case, stating that she oversaw the situation, monitoring it throughout the night. She claimed to have immediately contacted the police commissioner and the victim's parents upon learning of the crime and asked, What action did we not take?" to emphasize her government's quick response.

Mamata Banerjee emphasized that her government took swift and comprehensive action in response to the incident. As soon as she was informed, she contacted the police commissioner and the victim's parents, leaving no aspect of the situation unaddressed.

Mamata stands by commitment to justice

“What have we not done? What action did we not take? As soon as I came to know of the incident, I spoke to the police commissioner and spoke to the parents (of the woman),” Mamata Banerjee said.

Mamata Banerjee assured the victim's parents that the perpetrator would be sentenced to death, and she reaffirmed her commitment to this promise, emphasizing that she stands by her word.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated that she closely monitored the case throughout the night, maintaining constant communication with the police until the victim's cremation was complete. She highlighted the swift action taken by the police, who not only escorted the victim's family but also apprehended the suspect within 12 hours.

Mamata lauds Kolkata's police action

Mamata Banerjee praised the Kolkata Police for their prompt and efficient response, noting that they swiftly initiated the investigation and made the first arrest within a remarkable 12-hour timeframe.
“Police officials escorted the dead body of the victim, and a thorough investigation like DNA testing, CCTV footage, sample testing - everything was carried out, and within 12 hours, the murderer was arrested,” Mamata Banerjee said.

The investigation was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday, following a directive from the Calcutta High Court, which intervened in the case to ensure a thorough and impartial probe.

Mamata assures cooperation with CBI probe

Mamata Banerjee emphasized the importance of allowing sufficient time for a thorough investigation, stating that she had initially set a deadline of Sunday for the probe to be completed. She underscored that premature action against individuals without proper investigation is not feasible, and expressed her respect for both senior and junior doctors involved in the case.

Regarding the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) taking over the probe, she assured that her government will fully comply with the High Court's guidelines and cooperate with the CBI. She noted that before the High Court's intervention, the police had already summoned 34 people for questioning and had identified additional individuals for inquiry, but the case was subsequently transferred to the CBI.
