In a latest update of India’s Moon Mission- ‘Chandrayaan-3,’ Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said that its rover Pragyan came across a 4-metre diameter crater positioned 3 metres ahead of its location of the moon’s surface.

Taking it to X (formerly known as Twitter), the National Space Agency wrote, “On August 27, 2023, the Rover came across a 4-meter diameter crater positioned 3 meters ahead of its location. The Rover was commanded to retrace the path. It’s now safely heading on a new path.”

However, now the rover is heading safely on a new path, ISRO added.

Earlier on Sunday, they said that the Chandrayaan-3’s mission’s three objectives, two have been accomplished including a demonstration of a safe and soft landing on the lunar surface and a demonstration of the rover roving on the moon.

Further, it said that the in-situ scientific experiments are underway while all the payloads are performing normally.

Have a look at graph of moon’s soil temperature

Sharing a graph on the variation of the moon’s soil temperature at various depths, ISRO said, “ChaSTE (Chandra’s Surface Thermophysical Experiment) measures the temperature profile of the lunar topsoil around the pole, to understand the thermal behaviour of the moon’s surface. It has a temperature probe equipped with a controlled penetration mechanism capable of reaching a depth of 10 cm beneath the surface. The probe is fitted with 10 individual temperature sensors.”

Moreover, the space agency shared the visuals of Pragyan roaming around the ‘Shiv Shakti Point,’ the landing point of Chandrayaan-3, on the moon’s surface. It also rolled out over the surface and covered a distance of 8 metres.

On August 23 at 06.04 pm, India created history after Chandrayaan-3’s lander Vikram successfully touched down on the lunar surface. The lander is carrying six scientific payloads, including the rover Pragyan which will collect data over 14 days on Earth’s nearest celestial neighbour.
