Indian Space Research Organisation on Tuesday said that Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft has completed its orbits around the earth and is now heading towards the moon after it was successfully injected into the translunar orbit.

The official statement by ISRO says, “Chandrayaan-3 completes its orbits around the Earth and heads towards the Moon. A successful perigee-firing performed at ISTRAC, ISRO has injected the spacecraft into the translunar orbit. Next stop: the Moon 🌖 As it arrives at the moon, the Lunar-Orbit Insertion (LOI) is planned for Aug 5, 2023.”

Notably, the Chandrayaan-3 mission was launched on July 14, 2023, and is the third lunar exploration under the Chandrayaan programme, similar to its predecessor, Chandrayaan-2.

The spacecraft is made up of a lander weighing 1,723.89 kg, a rover weighing 26 kg, and a propulsion module weighing 2,148 kg. The mission’s primary goal is to successfully land the lander on the lunar surface. According to the experts, the lander will become independent of the propulsion module once it enters lunar orbit and is scheduled to soft-land on August 23 at 5:47 pm near the South Pole of the moon.

From a height of around 100 km above the moon’s surface, the lander will descend to the lunar surface. The soft landing is a tricky issue as it involves a series of complex manoeuvres consisting of rough and fine braking. After the soft landing, the rover will roll out and carry the experiments on the lunar surface.

After accomplishing a successful soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the Moon, India will become the fourth nation to reach this significant milestone.
