BJP's Manoj Sonkar has been declared the new mayor of Chandigarh on Tuesday after he defeated Kuldeep Tita of the Congress-AAP with 16 votes as opposed to her 12 votes. There were eight invalid votes. As the protest broke out soon after the results, marshals were called in to maintain order as demonstrations against Anil Masih, the ruling authority.

Mayor will now conduct the elections for the senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor.

Reacting to the victory, party's national president JP Nadda said, "That the INDI Alliance fought their first electoral battle and still lost to BJP shows that neither their arithmetic is working nor their chemistry."

Meanwhile, AAP national convener and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal called it a foul play. He tweeted, "The kind of foul play that has been in Chandigarh Mayor Election in broad daylight, is a matter of concern. If they stoop to this level in a Mayor election, they can go to any level in the general election. This is very worrying."

In addition to this, AAP announced that they will approach the Punjab and Delhi High Court questioning the decision on declaring the 8 votes invalid.
