The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is planning to introduce Open Book Examinations (OBE) for classes 9-12 students. This comes after the recommendations of the new National Curriculum Framework (NCrF) released last year. However, CBSE will first run a pilot programme in November-December this year before rolling it out officially across states.

As per the media reports, the CBSE has put forward a plan to pilot-run-open-book exams for some schools. This will include tests for English, Mathematics, and Science subjects for classes 9 and 10. English, Biology, and Mathematics exams will be held for classes 11 and 12 to assess the time being taken by the students.

Delhi University adopted OBE during Covid-19

The Delhi University had adopted the online OBE format for examinations amid the Covid-10 pandemic between 2020-2021. However, it resumed to the normal pen and paper format from 2022.

OBE Assess aims at critical thinking

Students are permitted to bring their notes, textbooks, and other study materials to the exam hall in an open-book test. It is not easier as they do not carry straightforward questions that can be answered by copying down the material simply. Rather, they will test the ability to analyse and apply concepts.
