New Delhi: Two days after the Supreme Court acknowledged that the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test – Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2024 paper leak had occurred in Hazaribagh and Patna, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has disclosed the detailed sequence of events surrounding the exam irregularities. These events implicated both the principal and vice principal of a school.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court reviewed a series of petitions related to the NEET-UG 2024 irregularities. After extensive deliberation, the court determined that administering a retest would be unwarranted. Despite confirming the paper leak incidents in Hazaribagh and Patna, the court emphasized that a new examination would have profound consequences for over 24 lakh students who had participated in the original test. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud highlighted that conducting a fresh exam would impose substantial disruptions and challenges for the large number of affected students.

NEET-UG exam: What CBI said on Hazaribagh paper leak

  • In a statement regarding its investigation into the NEET paper leak, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) revealed that Pankaj Kumar, identified as the 'mastermind,' conspired with the principal and vice principal of Oasis School in Hazaribagh to obtain the question paper hours before the exam began on May 5.
  • The CBI reported that Pankaj Kumar coordinated with Ehsanul Haque, the principal of Oasis School and the NTA city coordinator, and Imtiaz Alam, the vice principal and centre superintendent.
  • On the morning of May 5, trunks containing the NEET-UG 2024 question papers were delivered to the school and placed in a control room.
  • Shortly after the trunks arrived, Ehsanul Haque and Imtiaz Alam illegally and unauthorizedly allowed Pankaj Kumar to access the control room where the trunks were stored. Kumar then used advanced tools to open the trunks and retrieve the question papers, which have since been seized by authorities.
  • The leaked question papers were solved in Hazaribagh on the morning of the exam by a group of MBBS students from AIIMS Patna, RIMS Ranchi, and a Medical College in Bharatpur.
  • The solved papers were distributed to selected students who had paid for them. The CBI has identified and arrested most of these solvers, who are MBBS students from prestigious institutions. These solvers were specifically brought to Hazaribagh as part of the conspiracy. The agency has arrested seven alleged solvers, and additional members of the criminal network associated with Kumar have also been identified and apprehended.
  • The CBI is currently tracing the candidates who received the solved question papers and is taking appropriate action. To date, 36 individuals have been arrested in connection with the case.
