In a significant development, a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team has arrived in Kolkata to spearhead the investigation into the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at a state-run medical college. This move follows a directive from the Calcutta High Court, which mandated a thorough CBI probe into the case.

CBI and Forensic Experts on the Ground

The CBI’s arrival in Kolkata is accompanied by a specialized medical and forensic team from Delhi, underscoring the seriousness of the investigation. The Calcutta High Court's decision on Tuesday called for the CBI to take over the inquiry into the brutal assault and subsequent death of the post-graduate trainee doctor on August 9. The court has instructed the Kolkata Police to immediately transfer all relevant documents and evidence to the CBI.

Meanwhile, the tragic incident has sparked nationwide protests among doctors and medical students. On Tuesday, a nationwide strike was called by the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA), leading to a shutdown of outpatient department (OPD) services across the country. The protest, which also saw a demonstration at AIIMS Delhi, aimed to express solidarity with the victim and demand justice.

In response to the growing concerns, the National Medical Commission (NMC), under the direction of Union Health Minister JP Nadda, has issued a crucial advisory. The notice calls on all medical colleges and institutions to establish robust policies ensuring a safe working environment. The advisory emphasizes the need for comprehensive safety measures, including adequate lighting in corridors, surveillance through CCTV in sensitive areas, and overall enhanced security across hospital and college campuses.

Ongoing Investigation and Safety Measures

The deceased doctor was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, with allegations of rape and murder. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has also met with Union Health Minister JP Nadda, urging a detailed investigation and stronger safety protocols for medical professionals, particularly women.
