New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday arrested Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, for his alleged involvement in financial irregularities at the institution. Ghosh's arrest follows a two-week interrogation by the CBI, which also subjected him to a polygraph test as part of its investigation.

The CBI has charged Ghosh with criminal conspiracy, cheating, and dishonesty, alongside violations under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act. These charges, which relate to financial misconduct during his tenure, are serious and non-bailable.

Ghosh's stake in CBI case inquiry

The investigation into Ghosh’s activities intensified after the horrific rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College last month. The trainee’s body was discovered on August 9, sparking widespread outrage and protests across West Bengal. The case was transferred from Kolkata Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court, leading to Ghosh's arrest.

Ghosh served as the principal of RG Kar Medical College from February 2021 to September 2023. Despite being transferred in October 2023, he returned to the role within a month and continued until the tragic incident occurred. Additionally, Sandip Ghosh has been summoned by Kolkata Police for allegedly disclosing the identity of the rape-murder victim, further complicating his legal troubles. The Indian Medical Association has since suspended Ghosh’s membership following the disciplinary committee’s review of the incident.
