In a significant development in the investigation of the tragic murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor from Kolkata, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has found no evidence supporting the theory of gang rape, according to sources. The probe, as per information obtained exclusively by India Today, suggests that the horrific crime was perpetrated solely by Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer attached to the Kolkata Police.Forensic Evidence Points to a Single AssailantThe forensic analysis has reportedly confirmed that Roy was the sole individual involved in both the rape and murder of the doctor. DNA evidence has further reinforced this conclusion, contradicting earlier suspicions of multiple attackers. These findings are crucial as they dispel the initial theory of gang rape, which had sparked widespread outrage and led to intense public scrutiny of the investigation.Sanjoy Roy, who had a record of domestic violence and access to various departments within the government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was arrested on August 10, just a day after the doctors body was discovered in a seminar hall. CCTV footage reviewed by the CBI corroborates his presence at the crime scene, further solidifying the case against him.Ongoing Investigation and AllegationsDespite these revelations, the CBI has not yet ruled out the possibility of additional individuals being involved. The agency is expected to consult independent forensic experts to validate the current findings.Previously, there were allegations from a doctor who suggested the possibility of gang rape, citing a vaginal swab test that reportedly found 150 mg of liquid. Dr. Subarna Goswami argued that the nature of the injuries indicated the involvement of more than one person. The victims parents also supported this claim, presenting it before the Calcutta High Court and alleging the presence of a significant amount of semen in the victims body. However, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, referencing the autopsy report, dismissed these claims. Moitra clarified that the 150 grams mentioned in the report referred to the weight of the genitalia, not the amount of fluid, and noted that the autopsy did not indicate multiple assailants.RG Kar autopsy in the presence of a judicial magistrate and 3 doctors: Show no fracture to the pelvic girdle or other bones. 150 gm refers to the weight of inner and outer genitalia and not to an imaginary amount of fluid. Does not suggest multiple assailants, Moitra tweeted.Writ filed in Kolkata HC by mischievous politician lawyers has WRONG info:1. NO hurried cremation. Police escorted body home to Sodepur where family did cremation2. NO broken bones. Autopsy does not mention fracture3. NO “150gm semen”. That was weight of genitalia— Mahua Moitra (@MahuaMoitra) August 20, 2024Meanwhile, it is important to note that the Supreme Court during the hearing of the case on Thursday criticized the Bengal Police and the state government for the delay in the FIR. The top court also requested the protesting doctors to resume their work and assured them that no action would be taken against them. The next hearing in the case is now on September 5.
