CBI files first charge sheet, names 13 in NEET-UG paper leak scandal

New Delhi: In the suspected NEET-UG examination paper leak case, the Central Bureau of Investigation named 13 people as defendants in its initial charge sheet, which was filed on Thursday. The chargesheet, which was submitted to a special CBI court in Patna, listed the accused's involvement in various crimes, including fraud, criminal conspiracy, and evidence destruction.

The 13 accused named in the chargesheet include: Nitish Kumar, Amit Anand, Sikander Yadvendu, Ashutosh Kumar-1, Roshan Kumar, Manish Prakash, Ashutosh Kumar-2, Akhilesh Kumar, Avdesh Kumar, Anurag Yadav, Abhishek Kumar, Shivnandan Kumar, and Ayush Raj.

Bihar police take the investigation ahead

According to news reports, all of the suspects were apprehended by Bihar Police during their investigation between May 5, the day of the examination, and June 23, when the CBI took over the case. In order to acquire evidence against those implicated, the CIA further claimed to have used advanced forensic techniques, CCTV footage, artificial intelligence, and tower location analysis.

Forty accused have been taken into custody thus far, of whom twenty-five are under the custody of the CBI and fifteen of the Bihar Police. Moreover, 58 distinct places have been searched by the central agency. Pankaj Kumar, the main suspect in the NEET paper leak case, was detained by the CBI during its investigation. Kumar had stolen the Oasis School question paper with the school's principal, Ehsanul Haque,'s help. In addition to him, the CBI also detained Vice Principal Imtiaz Alam, who was the center superintendent on exam day, and the city coordinator for the National Testing Agency. "The agency has taken all three into custody. Upcoming charge sheets will include their roles, according to the officials.

NEET-UG 2024 and the scenario 

Six First Information Reports have been filed by the central inquiry agency, which is looking into the suspected irregularities in the medical admission exam. The Bihar FIR concerns a document leak, while the others from Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra deal with candidate impersonation and cheating. The investigation into the purported anomalies in the NEET-UG 2024 is the subject of the agency's own FIR on a referral from the Union Education Ministry.

For admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other relevant courses in both government and private institutions, the NTA administers the NEET-UG medical test. This year, the exam was administered by NTA at 4,750 locations in 571 cities, including 14 overseas. In excess of 23 lakh applicants took the medical exam.
