The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently carrying out searches at various locations associated with Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra, including her residences in Kolkata and other areas. This investigative action is related to the cash-for-query scandal, which led to Moitra's loss of her Lok Sabha membership last year.

The CBI initiated this move after registering an FIR against Mahua Moitra concerning the scandal on Thursday. The development came following directives from the Lokpal, highlighting the seriousness of the matter.

On March 15, the Lokpal instructed the CBI to investigate the allegations and furnish a report within six months. Additionally, the agency was directed to submit monthly progress reports.

Teams from the CBI commenced search operations at Mahua Moitra's Kolkata residence and other locations early on Saturday, officially notifying her about the ongoing search proceedings and beginning the operation.

The accusations against Mahua Moitra include allegations of accepting bribes from businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for asking his questions in Parliament. She is also accused of sharing her parliamentary login credentials with the businessman.

However, Mahua Moitra has refuted the bribery allegations, asserting that she shared the credentials to have the businessman's staff enter her parliamentary queries on the official portal.

In December, Mahua Moitra was expelled from the Lok Sabha due to "unethical conduct."

Subsequently, Mahua Moitra has contested her expulsion in the Supreme Court. Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee has nominated her as the party's Lok Sabha candidate from West Bengal's Krishnanagar constituency.
