Canada: In a bold response to Donald Trump’s latest tariff imposition, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a 25% tariff on $155 billion worth of US imports. The move comes as a direct retaliation to Trump’s sweeping trade measures, which target Canada, Mexico, and China. Trudeau urged Canadians to support local businesses and opt for domestic vacations to counter the economic impact.

Trump cites ‘National Emergency’ to justify tariffs

President Donald Trump’s tariff announcement on Saturday invoked the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, citing a “major threat” posed by illegal immigration and drug trafficking. According to Trump, these tariffs are necessary to hold Canada, Mexico, and China accountable for their roles in the crisis, particularly regarding the fentanyl epidemic. Starting Tuesday, Canadian and Mexican exports to the US will face a 25% tariff, while Canadian energy resources will see a reduced 10% levy. Meanwhile, Chinese goods, which were already subject to tariffs, will incur an additional 10% duty.

US accuses Mexico of drug cartel alliances

In addition to trade disputes, tensions between the US and Mexico have escalated further after the White House accused Mexico of having an “intolerable alliance” with drug cartels. This accusation has deepened the rift between the two nations, sparking diplomatic outrage from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.

Global supply chains face major disruptions

The impact of these tariffs is expected to reverberate across global supply chains, affecting industries ranging from energy to food production. Experts warn that rising costs and trade restrictions could destabilize markets, forcing businesses to reassess supply routes and pricing strategies. Trump, a long-time advocate of tariffs as a tool for economic leverage, has made it clear that further trade measures are on the horizon. This week, he hinted at additional duties on the European Union, specifically targeting semiconductors, oil, and various consumer products.

Trump: ‘It is my duty to protect Americans’

In a statement from Florida, Trump reaffirmed his commitment to defending US economic and national security interests. Taking to social media, he declared, “It is my duty as President to ensure the safety of all.”
