The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light to eight new projects for Indian Railways, which will extend the existing rail network by an additional 900 kilometers. These projects, with an estimated cost of approximately Rs 24,657 crore, will span across 14 districts in seven states: Maharashtra, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Telangana, and West Bengal. The Ministry of Railways aims to complete these projects by the fiscal year 2030-31.
In a significant boost for tourism, the Ajanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage site, will be connected to the Indian Railway Network. This new connectivity is expected to facilitate the travel of a large number of tourists to the historic site, enhancing the region's accessibility and promoting cultural heritage.
According to the press statement released by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the approved projects will generate direct employment for approximately three crore man-days during the construction phase. This move is expected to significantly contribute to the economic development of the regions involved, in alignment with the government's vision of a self-reliant ('Atmanirbhar') India.
These new railway line projects will provide direct connectivity and improve mobility, enhancing the efficiency and service reliability of Indian Railways. The projects are part of the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which focuses on multi-modal connectivity to bolster infrastructure development. The initiative will see the construction of 64 new stations, improving connectivity for six districts—East Singhbhum, Bhadadri Kothagudem, Malkangiri, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, and Rayagada—and approximately 510 villages, benefiting a population of around 40 lakh.
