The notification under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was issued late in the evening on Monday. An announcement regarding this was made earlier by the Home Ministry. With the implementation of this law, people from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh living in India will be given citizenship. The BJP had included this in its 2019 manifesto.
CAA was passed in Parliament on December 11, 2019, after which it became a topic of discussion and protest across the country. The Citizenship Amendment Act creates a fast-track road to Indian citizenship for refugees from Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist, and Christian communities in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.
As soon as the notification was issued, security arrangements were tightened across the country. CRPF and paramilitary forces have been deployed especially in West Bengal. Security has also increased in the National Capital region, along with police flag marching in Shaeen Bagh and north east Delhi.

For this, the Citizenship Act of 1955 has been amended, under which those who have come to India to seek refuge due to religious persecution in their country before December 31, 2014, can be given Indian citizenship.
There were protests against this law in Delhi's Shaheen Bagh and in Guwahati, Assam, although people had to withdraw their protests in view of the COVID-19 infection. It is noteworthy that it has been more than four years since the Citizenship Amendment Act was passed in Parliament, but it took more time to implement it because its rules and procedures had to be finalized.
