New Delhi: In a case that echoes the notorious antics of the fictional Bunty and Babli, a real-life couple from Delhi has been arrested for an audacious laptop theft. The duo, identified as Pawan Kumar Bir Singh and Anita Sharma, was apprehended by Nagpur Police after allegedly absconding with 38 laptops and CCTV equipment valued at approximately ₹16 lakh. Their elaborate scheme involved posing as business owners looking to open a computer workshop, but it quickly unraveled, leading to their capture. The Fraudulent Operation: How They Executed Their PlanAccording to police reports, Pawan and Anita executed their con by first renting a house and shop in Bajaj Nagar, Nagpur. They approached local businessman Ajay Mate under the pretense of being representatives of a Delhi-based IT company. They claimed they were expanding their operations into Nagpur and needed laptops for their new business, said a police spokesperson.Initially, they acquired 18 old laptops and then convinced Ajay to sell them 28 new Dell laptops with the promise of immediate payment. On October 21, after receiving the laptops, they vanished into thin air, leaving behind only a complaint for the police to investigate. The Great Escape: How They Evaded CaptureAfter their daring escape, Ajay Mate reported the theft to the Bajaj Nagar police, who launched an investigation. The police later discovered that this was not an isolated incident Pawan and Anita had reportedly stolen over 150 laptops from various locations across India. They would flee to holiday destinations after each heist until their funds ran low, explained DCP Lohit Matani. The couples luck ran out when they were tracked down on a train near Bodh Gaya in Bihar. Utilizing advanced cellphone surveillance techniques, authorities managed to intercept them just as they were planning another robbery in Puri. The Aftermath: Recovery Efforts and Ongoing InvestigationsFollowing their arrest on November 16, police recovered six of the stolen laptops valued at ₹16 lakh. The investigation revealed that the couple had sold many of their stolen goods in Delhis grey markets at significantly reduced prices—between ₹10,000 and ₹15,000 each—before these items were resold for much higher amounts by traders.DCP Matani remarked on the couples audacity: After acquiring the laptops, they immediately fled while assuring the dealer that payment would be made the next day. As investigations continue, authorities are working diligently to recover more stolen property and prevent further incidents of this nature. This case serves as a stark reminder of how even seemingly innocuous business ventures can mask elaborate fraud schemes, drawing parallels with cinematic tales of deception and intrigue.
