New Delhi: In the ongoing political turmoil surrounding the alleged rape-murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has denounced the upcoming 'Nabanna Abhijan' rally scheduled for August 27 as "illegal" and an effort to incite unrest in Kolkata.
At a press conference led by senior TMC leaders Chandrima Bhattacharya, Kunal Ghosh, and Joyprakash Majumdar, the party released videos they claim were obtained through a “sting operation.” These videos allegedly feature individuals advocating for violence to ensure the rally’s impact. The TMC accused right-wing groups and certain leftists, including the CPI(M), of conspiring to turn the event violent.

In response, the BJP refuted these allegations, accusing the TMC of manipulating the police to create fear and suppress the rally, which has gained significant traction. Senior BJP leader Amit Malviya stated that the police should maintain order during the protest march and criticized the TMC for allegedly using the police to stifle public dissent.
The TMC also questioned the rationale behind the rally’s decision to march to Nabanna, the state secretariat, instead of the CBI office, where the investigation is ongoing. They warned of potential disruptions and alleged that external forces might be brought in to incite violence. BJP Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya denied the party’s involvement in organizing the rally, claiming that any BJP members participating would do so in their personal capacity. He accused the TMC of spreading fear and called on the police to act decisively to prevent violence.
The CPI(M) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) also weighed in, with the CPI(M) accusing the TMC of panic-driven accusations and the ABVP expressing support for democratic protests.
