The Ministry of Railways has released a video showcasing the swift progress of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, highlighting key developments in Maharashtra and Gujarat. The construction work, particularly over the Vaitarna River, is moving ahead at a rapid pace, marking a significant milestone for India's future of high-speed travel.

Construction on Vaitarna River Bridge

In Maharashtra, a temporary access bridge is being constructed over the Vaitarna River, located in the Nashik and Palghar districts. The bridge, spanning approximately 2.32 kilometers, will be the longest river crossing along the entire bullet train route. This structure is crucial for the movement of logistics and equipment, serving as a backbone for the high-speed rail project.

Progress in Gujarat

Meanwhile, in Gujarat, the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) is advancing work on 11 of the 20 planned river bridges, including a 1.4-kilometer bridge over the Narmada River, which connects Surat and Bharuch railway stations. The NHSRCL is employing innovative construction techniques, such as launching girders from both ends of the structure to expedite the project. This progress reflects the importance of Gujarat's role in the overall project, with 20 of the 24 river bridges located in the state.

Completion timeline

The 508-kilometer Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor will feature 12 stations, with eight in Gujarat and four in Maharashtra. Key stations in Gujarat include Sabarmati, Ahmedabad, and Vadodara, while in Maharashtra, stations will be located at Mumbai, Thane, and Virar. The government aims to operationalize the first phase between Surat and Bilimora by 2026, with the entire project slated for completion by 2028. Once completed, the bullet train is expected to reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to just three hours.
