Discovery of body

On June 17, the police found a girl's body near a temple in a village within the Bansdih Road police station area. The face of the body was severely burnt, making identification difficult. After extensive investigation, the police identified the body as belonging to a girl from the same village. When questioned, her family members initially reacted with fear. Under strict interrogation, the truth finally emerged.

Police reveal truth

Superintendent of Police Devranjan Verma stated, "After recovering the minor girl's body, we sent it for a post-mortem. The report revealed that she was strangled to death, and her face was partially burnt with acid. After a thorough investigation, we arrested two brothers of the victim. During interrogation, it was revealed that their sister was having an affair with a boy. Angered by this, they killed her."

Love turns fatal

Despite the brothers' repeated warnings, the minor girl continued to talk to her boyfriend secretly. On the day of the incident, the three brothers caught her in the act and, in a fit of rage, strangled her to death. To conceal her identity, they then poured acid on her face.

Global context of honor killings

According to a United Nations report, approximately 5,000 girls worldwide fall victim to honor killings each year, with around 1,000 of these occurring in India. This means that one out of every five honor killing victims globally is from India. However, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) of India reports around 500 honor killings over the past eight years.
