ED summons Farooq Abdullah over J&K Cricket Association finances

New Delhi: In a significant development, Farooq Abdullah, the leader of the National Conference and Member of Parliament, has been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate. The summon is in connection with alleged financial irregularities related to the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association. Abdullah now joins the list of opposition leaders who have faced scrutiny from the central probe agency.

Opposition leader faces ED inquiry

National Conference stalwart Farooq Abdullah is set to undergo questioning by the Enforcement Directorate tomorrow. The ED's investigation is centred around suspected financial irregularities within the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association. The summons places Abdullah in the recent trend of opposition figures being subject to inquiries by the central agency.

What financial irregularities?

The situation involves the diversion of funds belonging to the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association, which were transferred to personal bank accounts of various individuals, including the office bearers of the cricket association. The agency initiated a money laundering investigation based on a chargesheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation against the office bearers of the association.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren is being summoned in a money-laundering case related to an alleged land scam, while his Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal, who has ignored three summons, is under investigation by the agency in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case. All these leaders are part of the INDIA bloc.

What are the allegations? 

Meanwhile, what the allegations that have been leveled against the National Conference leader is that he misused his position when he served as the president of the association. He is accused of appointing people in the JKCA in order to launder the funds sponsored by the BCCI.

Farooq Abdullah served as the preside of the Jammu And Kashmir Cricket Association from 2001 to 2012. The alleged scam which is currently being investigated by two central probe agencies including the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) apparently took place between 2004 to 2009.
